Top 10 Movies Based on Video Games
The odds of Hollywood producers gambling on movies based on video games seemed almost zero during the early 90s. But thanks to Super Mario Bros (1993), people watched a movie inspired by globally prominent gaming characters. However, it turned out to be a box office disaster. But this genre has picked up a lot of steam recently. Numerous video game movies have been released in the last few years. Are they perfect? Not really! But they excel at providing top-quality entertainment!
Here are the top 10 video game movies! Enjoy!
Monster Hunter
Monster Hunter is an exciting mess to watch. We know it sounds a little odd. But the long term alliance of Milla Jovovich and Paul W. S. Anderson does an “okay” job here. There is no denying that its action sequences and visuals look stunning. However, its plot looks weak. Additionally, it is filled with many dull dialogues. Despite all the flaws, it entertains the audience.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
The Final Chapter is the best instalment in the Resident Evil movie franchise. Is it a perfect movie? No way! There are some scenes in this movie that appear absurd and messy. But it does not disappoint us with its insane zombie fighting scenes and performances. It also bestows a satisfying conclusion to the overall series. It ended up earning more than $300 million at the global box office. Also, the climax is pretty cool to watch.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Despite getting heavily promoted by Disney, the live-action POP instalment bombed in terms of collections. It earned nearly $335 million against the production budget of $200 million. Still, it was accepted as a major improvement over the previous movie adaptations of video games. The visuals and action sequences looked absolutely gorgeous. However, it suffered from bland and poor storytelling. The cast consisting of Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, and others did a phenomenal job.
Rampage
Rampage could have been an amazing movie if it did not suffer from a poor plot. The overall story looked a bit silly. But its visual effects and the chemistry between the leading duo, Dwayne Johnson and Naomie Harris, looked excellent. An albino gorilla gets in contact with a lethal pathogen that enhances its rage and power. Later, it saves the city of Chicago from being destroyed by two other mutated animals. A screenplay cannot get any sillier than this!
Tomb Raider
The previous Tomb Raider instalments might have sucked big time. But they became popular due to their sexy and butt-kicking protagonist, Angelina Jolie. She was a big sensation back then. In 2018, it was Alicia Vikander’s time to fill the shoes of her predecessor. This reboot did not reach new heights. But it manages to provide a fresh start to Lara Croft’s character. Critics praised it for being grittier and more realistic than its previous entries.
The Angry Birds Movie
Despite its silly and over-the-top story, The Angry Birds Movie stands pretty well on its own. Do not expect yourself to get on a non-stop laughter ride while watching this movie. But it has some really nice and funny moments. The scene displaying the leading trio meeting the Mighty Eagle for the first time is damn hilarious. But the film becomes very predictable in the end. However, Josh Gad’s voice role as Chuck stands out the most in this little Rovio project.
Mortal Kombat
Despite the uneven execution of its screenplay, the 2021 reboot performed much better than the 90s’ terrible Mortal Kombat films. They were absolute disasters! Anyway, it was released simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max. Fans liked its gore and bloody violence. It remains more faithful to the video game series. The performances, fight scenes and visuals were also praised. Criticism was targeted towards its rushed pace and messy storyline.
Pokemon Detective Pikachu
Pokemon Detective Pikachu is one of the highest-rated video game movies on Rotten Tomatoes. It finally managed to break the “rotten” curse and got a fresh rating on the website. The designs of all the Pokemon (especially Pikachu) and Ryan Reynolds’ voice performance are incredible. The latter literally carries the entire movie. It perfectly balances all the comedic and emotional elements.
Sonic the Hedgehog
First of all, the makers of this movie deserve all the praise for actually listening to the fans. Do you remember how brutally it was criticized for the design of its leading character? The people went mad over it on the internet. SEGA openly accepted its mistake and gave Sonic a new design similar to its video game appearance. Fans loved its new version in the theatres. And special thanks to Jim Carrey’s signature style and charisma. He took the character of Dr Robotnik on another level.
The Angry Birds Movie 2
The second animated entry in The Angry Birds series surprised everyone with its improved storyline, humour, voice performances, and visuals. It is a major improvement over its predecessor. For the first time, we witnessed the union of the birds and the pigs against a common enemy named Zeta. She turns out to be Mighty Eagle’s ex-fiance. It is a 72% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
