I’ll be there for you…

This song by The Rembrandts has played an important role in shaping our countless funny and emotional memories from Friends, right? No other sitcom has ever reached the level of prominence as Friends did. It is still considered one of the greatest tv shows of all time. And people always wonder how it happened! Several crucial factors are responsible for its gigantic success. But the one that stands out the most is its characters! Every one of them is unique and deals with his/her own damn problems. But they also possess some special qualities. And the best part is that they are always there for each other.

We may have entered the era of streaming, but this sitcom still manages to bring laughter into our lives. Its reunion episode is scheduled to stream on HBO Max on May 27 this month.

Here are the top 10 Friends characters! Enjoy!

Gunther

Gunther (James Micheal Tyler)

Do you know that Tyler was hired because he was the only side character who knew how to use a coffee machine? Well, Gunther might not have gotten the credit for starring in All My Children as Bryce, but he certainly deserves all the credit for being a crucial supporting character to the show. Despite not getting as much screentime as the lead performers, he managed to reside in the hearts of the fans. The low-esteemed manager of Central Perk always had feelings for Rachel. And do not get us started on his jealousy towards Rachel’s boyfriends. He finally manages to tell her about his feelings in the final episode.

Janice Litman-Goralnik

Janice Litman-Goralnik (Maggie Wheeler)

“Oh My God!”

It is probably the most annoying tv catchphrases of all time. Despite that, it has become one of the most popular catchphrases too. The moment we hear it, we know in an instant who is going to appear on the show… or should we say in Chandler’s life? Imagine what would have happened if Chandler ended up with Janice. Wait! Oh dear God, what have we done?

Jokes aside but Maggie Wheeler did a fantastic job at playing this annoying little character. Her over-the-top persona combined with her “iconic” laugh never fails to entertain us.

PS: We know that you did not know her full name. That’s why we mentioned it!

Richard Burke

Richard Burke (Tom Selleck)

If you are interested in turning your pretty-looking female patient’s eye appointment into the start of a good relationship, then you better contact Dr Richard Burke about it! He truly excelled at winning the hearts of the ladies. Just ask Monica about it! Despite their big age difference, both fell in love with each other and had a pretty good relationship run. But Monica’s desire to have a child and their age difference were too hard to be ignored. Obviously, her heart got shattered and took a very long time to repair itself. Tom Selleck delivered an excellent and attractive performance as Richard Burke. And his moustache still rocks!

Mike Hannigan

Mike Hannigan (Paul Rudd)

The world knows Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. But the diehard fans of Friends remember him as Mike Hannigan. Meet the guy who gives a tough competition to David and wins the heart of Phoebe right under his nose. Poor David! But Mike was obviously the better choice! I mean, who can resist Rudd’s charm? No one! His portrayal of Mike was smooth and natural. There is a rumour that his character was supposed to be short in the show. But the lead cast liked him very much. So, the writers decided to expand his role by connecting him to Phoebe. That’s Paul Rudd for you! (Do not forget to inform us about his secret of being so young even after crossing the age of 50.)

Phoebe Buffay-Hannigan/Ursula Buffay

phoebe buffay

Phoebe Buffay-Hannigan/Ursula Buffay (Lisa Kudrow)

Probably the least developed character among the lead performers of the show… Phoebe! But when it comes to giving fitting savage replies, no one can beat her. She is way too good at that! Also, the legendary smelly cat song! It is her speciality. From spending her childhood on the streets of New York to becoming a masseuse and a pretty “expert” guitarist, she has spent one hell of a life.

Do you know that once Lisa Kudrow planned to leave the show? Yes, it is true! She was unsure about her character’s future. But thanks to the cast members! They convinced her to return to this beautiful project.

Ross Geller

Ross Geller (David Schwimmer)

“Pivot!”

Sorry folks, it just sounds so funny! There is no doubt in admitting that Ross is one of the biggest jerks on the show. But he is also a good man who loves Rachel to death. His competitive and annoying personality often gets in problematic situations. And we have witnessed him countless times aggravating the issue instead of solving it. But his presence in various principle moments of the show certainly made them more entertaining. Despite facing three failed marriages, he ends up reconciling with Rachel at the end of the show.

Many of you may know that the role of Ross Geller was written for David Schwimmer. Other cast members might have auditioned for their respective characters. But the writers had him in their minds while developing the sitcom. He was the first person to get selected too.

Joey Tribbiani

joey tribbiani

Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc)

“How you doin’?”

Yes, you are looking at the most popular catchphrase of the sitcom! Despite sounding like a simple line, Joey’s style and charm have immortalized it! A little low on the brains but a perfect ladies man and always ready to help his friends in need. That’s Joey for you! Just get stung by a jellyfish and he will be there to… well, you must know what we are talking about here!

Joey looks too good in the first two seasons of the show. But as we move on to the next instalments, we find him more cute and dumb at the same time. It seems like the writers lost track of his growth and development. Still, he is the most adorable tv characters of all time.

Monica Geller

monica geller

Monica Geller (Courteney Cox)

Not everyone can find Monica’s company to be very comfortable. Her obsession with cleanliness and keeping everything organized will get to you sooner or later. Despite sharing the same level of competitive behaviour as his brother, she is definitely more lovable than him. She slowly becomes a part of one of the show’s central romances with Chandler. There was a time when Monica felt a little insecure about doing big things with her life. But as the sitcom progresses, we find her character getting more developed compared to her previous appearances. We still do not know why Courteney Cox is the only member of the lead cast who never got nominated for an Emmy!

Rachel Green

rachel green

Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston)

From leaving Barry at the altar to becoming a successful buyer at Ralph Lauren, Rachel surely has come a long way! She struggled with her new life in New York at first, but she turned it all around with her hard work. Her character development in the show is marvellous. Additionally, we cannot ignore her famous quotes and fashion styles. She is literally one of the prominent pillars of pop culture. The level of maturity she achieves in the last couple of seasons is astonishing.

Chandler Bing

chandler bing

Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry)

Do you remember those times when Chandler was just a guy who used sarcasm as a defence mechanism? How he always complained about this lousy job and luck? And also, how his luck ran out with “a few” ladies? Well, he is not that sore loser anymore! Thanks to Monica, he learnt how to be happy and mature in his life. And the best part is that he did not have to get rid of his amazing sense of sarcasm. Can you even imagine this show without his goofy nature and epic sarcastic comments? Nope! That’s clearly not possible! He made a lot of mistakes in his life. But unlike Ross, he always corrected them.
