A smartphone is a portable device that combines mobile telephone and computing functions into one unit. They are distinguished from feature phones by their stronger hardware capabilities and extensive mobile operating systems, which facilitate wider software, internet (including web browsing over mobile broadband), and multimedia functionality (including music, video, cameras, and gaming), alongside core phone functions such as voice calls and text messaging. Smartphones typically contain a number of metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) integrated circuit (IC) chips, include various sensors that can be leveraged by pre-included and third-party software (such as a magnetometer, proximity sensors, barometer, gyroscope, accelerometer, and more.

Google Pixel 4A (350$):

The Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a (5G) are Android smartphones from the Google Pixel product line. Serving as mid-range variants of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, the Pixel 4a was officially announced on August 3, 2020, while the Pixel 4a (5G) was officially announced on September 30, 2020. The Pixel 4a and 4a (5G) resemble the Pixel 4 but have a polycarbonate unibody construction and Gorilla Glass 3 for the screen. Both devices are available in ‘Just Black’. ‘Clearly White’ is exclusive to the Pixel 4a (5G), only on Verizon with millimeter-wave (mmWave) support at launch. Both have stereo loudspeakers, one located on the bottom edge and the other doubling as the earpiece, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. A USB-C port is used for charging and connecting other accessories.

iPhone SE 2nd Gen. (399$):

The second-generation iPhone SE (also known as the iPhone SE 2 or the iPhone SE 2020) is a smartphone designed and developed by Apple Inc. It is part of the 13th generation of the iPhone, alongside the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro/Pro Max models. Apple announced the second-generation iPhone SE on April 15, 2020, and discontinued the iPhone 8 series. The iPhone SE succeeded the smaller and lighter first-generation iPhone SE. Pre-orders began on April 17, 2020, and the phone was subsequently released on April 24, 2020. It was released with a starting price of US$399 and positioned as a budget phone.

OnePlus Nord N10 5G (300$):

The OnePlus Nord N10 5G is an Android smartphone manufactured by OnePlus as part of its Nord series. It was released in October 2020 alongside the Nord N100. The OnePlus Nord N10 5G has a 6.49 in (165 mm) 1080 × 2400 FHD+ 90Hz IPS LCD display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, ~83.5% screen-to-body ratio, and a ~406 PPI pixel density. The front glass is Gorilla Glass 3, while the back and frame are constructed of plastic. The phone itself measures 163 x 74.7 x 8.95 mm (6.4 x 2.94 x 0.35 in) and weighs 190 g (6.7 oz). It has a 4,300 mAh non-removable battery capable of up to Warp Charge 30T (30 W). The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G chip (8nm), with an octa-core processor (2×2.0 GHz Kryo 560 Gold & 6×1.7 GHz Kryo 560 Silver) and an Adreno 619L GPU. The phone comes with 128 GB of UFS 2.1 storage (which can be expanded via microSD) and 6 GB LPDDR4x RAM.

Nokia 5.4 (250$):

 

You have to lower your expectations for any smartphone that dips below $250, but the Nokia 5.4 will impress. Unlike Motorola’s budget phones, you get NFC so you can pay at select stores with the phone via Google Pay, and HMD promises two years of Android version upgrades and three years of monthly security updates. That kind of software support on a phone this cheap is rare (though HMD has lately been slow at issuing updates). The 6.4-inch LCD screen now uses a hole-punch design for the selfie camera rather than a notch, so it looks more modern, but it still doesn’t have an HD resolution. That didn’t bug me too much, and at least it manages to get decently bright. More importantly, the battery lasts a little more than a full day with average use. Other perks include a headphone jack, fingerprint sensor, and a MicroSD slot to add to the 128 gigabytes of storage that comes with it (double the storage of the Nokia 5.3).

TCL 10L (175$):

The plastic-backed 10L is more durable and has similarly good performance, even if it uses the slower Snapdragon 665 processor—for $200 less. Its battery can go past a full day, and while it can take some nice photos during daylight hours, the lack of a night mode on this model means your low-light shots are going to look quite poor. Its screen is also a little too dim to see in the sunny outdoors. TCL’s biggest drawback is that, like Motorola, it’s only promising one Android version upgrade for these phones for now up to Android 11 (but two years of security updates). That’s disappointing, and it doesn’t bode well for the longevity of these phones.

Moto G Power (250$):

A really long-lasting phone endures for more than 11 hours on our battery test. The new Moto G Power blows them away with a runtime of 14 hours and 4 minutes. That’s among the best phone battery life we’ve ever seen, which is really remarkable when you consider the Moto G Power costs under $250. (And there’s a $199 version if you can live with less RAM and storage.) But that’s not the only reason this Android phone made our best cheap phone list.

Samsung Galaxy A20 (250$):

The Samsung Galaxy A20 range is an Android smartphone developed by Samsung Electronics. They were released in April 2019. The range comes with Android 9 (Pie) with One UI, 32GB internal storage, and a 4000 mAh battery. The A20 series is one of the best-selling in Samsung’s long line of smartphones. The main reason is that it presents a good perceived aspect for the price. It has a large display with virtual buttons and minimal bezels. The Samsung Galaxy A20 has a 6.4-inch HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-V Display with a 720×1560 resolution. The phone itself measures 158.4 X 74.7 X 7.8mm and weighs 169 g. It is powered by an Octa-core (2×1.6 GHz Cortex-A73 & 6×1.35 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU and a Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. It comes with 32GB internal storage, expandable up to 256GB via MicroSD, and 3GB RAM. It has a non-removable 4000 mAh battery. The Samsung A20 also has a dual Nano sim card slot.

Moto G Stylus (299$):

You don’t have to spend big bucks for a phone like the Galaxy Note 10 to get a stylus with your handset. The Moto G Stylus costs $299 and there’s a handy stylus tucked right into the bottom right corner of the phone. While you won’t get S Pen levels of functionality, you will be able to remove the stylus and start jotting down notes on the Motorola phone’s screen, all without having to unlock your device. The stylus also can help you take screenshots and edit photos. In many ways, the Moto G Stylus is exactly like last year’s edition of the Moto G Power. They’ve got the same screen size and processor, though the G Stylus comes with more storage and a bigger main camera sensor. The biggest tradeoff, though, is a battery, where the Moto G Stylus makes do with a 4,000 mAh power pack. Even with the smaller battery, the G Stylus still lasted more than 12 hours on our battery test, making this a long-lasting phone for people who want a productivity-boosting stylus.

Samsung, India’s most trusted smartphone brand, today launched Galaxy F12 and Galaxy F02s in India. Galaxy F series is Samsung’s India-specific smartphones for which Samsung has tied up with Flipkart. Galaxy F12 comes with a True 48MP quad-camera with ISOCELL Plus technology, a smooth 90Hz Display, and a best-in-segment 6000mAh battery. The Freedom 251 is a smartphone that was initially offered for sale in India at the promotional price of ₹251 (the equivalent of $3.54 as of 2020). Sold by Ringing Bells Private Limited, and marketed as the world’s cheapest smartphone, it was launched in February 2016 at an event attended by veteran BJP member Murli Manohar Joshi. Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kirit Somaiya has stated that the phone is bogus and the promotion is a Ponzi scheme. He filed a complaint which led to a first information report (FIR) being registered against Ringing Bells Director Mohit Goel and company president Ashok Chaddha under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as the Information Technology Act. However, the Allahabad High Court stayed the FIR as premature.
