Ragini MMS is a 2011 Indian found footage horror film directed by Pawan Kripalani and produced by Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms. It was released on 13 May 2011 (Friday the 13th). The film is inspired by the 2007 American supernatural horror film Paranormal Activity and is partly based on the real story of a girl from Delhi named Deepika. It is loosely based on Stephen King’s novel Gerald’s Game. The film’s collection was affected due to MTV Roadies 8.

Question Mark:

A Question Mark is a 2012 Hindi language horror film written and directed by Allyson Patel & Yash Dave and produced by Trippletake Motion Pictures. It was distributed by Percept Picture Company. The film received nine nominations and two awards at the St. Tropez International Film Festival, France. Akhlaque Khan won the best actor while Udhaya Rajni won the award for best editing. The film also received a standing ovation at the Oaxaca Film Festival in Mexico. This was the first time not only in Indian Cinema but the world over that a film was being released without a title. Instead, to describe the unseen, unheard story, all that was used as a symbol, “?” However, the movie had to be released with a written title “Question Mark” due to censorship rules. It delves into the found footage genre.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa:

Bhool Bhulaiyaa is a 2007 Indian Hindi-language psychological horror comedy film directed by Priyadarshan. It is a remake of the 1993 Malayalam film, Manichitrathazhu. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Shiney Ahuja, Vidya Balan, Ameesha Patel, Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi, Asrani, Rajpal Yadav, and Vikram Gokhale. The film score and soundtrack of the film were composed by Ranjit Barot and Pritam respectively, and the lyrics were written predominantly by Sameer, while Sayeed Quadri wrote one song. The film received universal critical acclaim and was also a huge commercial success. Subsequently, the film also attained cult status in Hindi cinema. Vidya Balan’s performance in the film is still considered iconic and regarded as one of her best to date.

Phoonk:

Ram Gopal Varma directed and Praveen Nischol produced Phoonk, a 2008 Indian horror thriller. Sudeep, Amruta Khanvilkar, and Ahsaas Channa play the key parts in the film, with Kenny Desai, Ashwini Kalsekar, and Zakir Hussain providing assistance. The film is centered on black magic and superstition. The film released on 22 August 2008 and was declared a blockbuster at the box office by several media outlets. Varma derived the idea for the film from a Hindi news channel which telecasts stories on black magic. The storyline of Phoonk is thematically similar to the Telugu thriller novel Tulasi Dalam by Yandamuri Veerendranath. Manish Choudhary and Suzanna Mukherjee feature in the key roles in Trip to Bhangarh, a 2014 Bollywood horror thriller. Jitendra Pawar directed the film, which was produced by Rock N Rolla Films. Onkar Singh is in charge of the music. Final Destination had a big effect on the plot. At a college reunion party, five friends plan to visit a haunted place called ‘Bhangarh’ and spend some time together. Darna Zaroori Hai is a 2006 Indian anthology horror thriller film produced by Satish Kaushik, and Ram Gopal Varma. The film is a sequel to Darna Mana Hai. It stars a host of Bollywood actors including Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Riteish Deshmukh, Mallika Sherawat, Isha Koppikar, Arjun Rampal, Rajpal Yadav, Bipasha Basu, Randeep Hooda, and more. The film was archived at the New York Institute of Technology, as part of the film course. Darna Zaroori Hai interweaves six stories into one film. Five children get lost in the middle of a forest until they find a haunted house. Inside, there is an old woman who agrees to tell them six scary stories, and they will all compete on who is able to sit through all six stories without getting scared.

3 A.M:

3 A.M. is a 2014 Hindi musical horror directed by Vishal Mahadkar, the film stars Rannvijay Singh, Anindita Nayar, Salil Acharya, and Kavin Dave in lead roles. The film released on 26 September 2014. The movie starts with few students trespassing on a haunted place called “Rudra Mills”, where they are stopped by Sunny to go further into the premises. Sunny then narrates his story to them. He starts by narrating about his fiancée Sarah who used to do programs in haunted places and while once she was unable to find her Bhagwad Gita, so she unwillingly had to leave for her show without it. At around midnight, Sunny woke up to see Sarah crying and on being asked what happened, Sarah says, “I am sorry” before vanishing away. While confused, Sunny receives a call from the police informing him about the death of Sarah, who was found hanging from the walls of Rudra Mills which was deemed as a haunted place.

Aatma:

Aatma is a 2013 Indian Hindi psychological horror film directed by Suparn Verma and starring Bipasha Basu and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles and Shernaz Patel and Doyel Dhawan in supporting roles. Aatma released on 22 March 2013 and centers on a mother who must fight to keep her daughter safe from the ghost of her husband. Nia (Doyel Dhawan) is the daughter of Maya (Bipasha Basu) and Abhay (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who are divorced. Maya and Nia live with Maya’s parents (Shiv Subramaniam) and (Shernaz Patel). Nia is unaware of the fact that her father is dead. Maya deliberately hides the truth from her as Nia is a sensitive child and adores her father. Things start getting bizarre when Paras, Nia’s classmate who bullies her in the classroom, ends up dead. Soon after, Nia’s teacher, Mrs. Sinha, who complains about Nia, is also found dead. Moreover, Nia often starts talking to her dead father.

Stree:

Stree is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language horror comedy film whose plot is inspired by the Karnataka urban legend known as Nale Ba (English: “Come Tomorrow”), about a spirit who knocks on people’s doors at night. Helmed by Amar Kaushik in his directorial debut and produced by Dinesh Vijan and Raj & D.K., it stars Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao alongside Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Aparshakti Khurana. The plot is based on the Indian folk legend about a witch who abducts men at night when they are alone and only leaves their clothes behind. The residents of a town named Chanderi to believe in the spirit of an angry woman, referred to as “Stree”, who stalks men and whisks them away during the four days of a religious festival every year, causing many disappearances over the years. To protect the residents from her wrath, “O Stree, come tomorrow” is written in Hindi (ओ स्त्री, कल आना) with bat’s blood on the entrances of all homes and men are advised to not roam alone after 10 pm during the festive season, and move in groups for safety – a parallel of instructions women are usually told to follow for their own safety.

Bhoot:

Bhoot is a 2003 Indian supernatural horror film directed by Ram Gopal Varma and stars Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar in the lead roles. It was the second horror film made by Ram Gopal Verma after Raat. It was perceived to be different from a typical Hindi film as it did not contain songs. It was later dubbed in Telugu as 12 Va Anthasthu and remade in Tamil as Shock. The film was a box-office hit. Urmila won several accolades and awards for her performance as a ghost-possessed wife. Verma made a sequel called Bhoot Returns which was released on 12 October 2012.
