Top 10 Best Movies So Far
Last year was a complete nightmare for all the movies around the world. The ongoing COVID pandemic certainly affected Hollywood as we witnessed various prominent movies getting postponed. The OTT movies performed brilliantly. However, we cannot the same for the theatrical projects. The online release guarantees to deliver a decent profit to the producers. But it cannot replace the real movie-watching experience in the theatres.
Various governments allowed to open movie theatres for the people this year. However, they are currently not operating with full attendance. But it feels good to witness our normal ways of life coming back on tracks. So, we decided to make a list of the top 10 movies of 2021 so far! Enjoy!
The Vigil
Producer Jason Blum is well-known for making amazing horror movies under his banner, Blumhouse Productions. Some of these projects have truly excelled at providing good story and frightening scares. The Vigil is definitely among them. It was praised for not depending too much on jump scares. Its dark and creepy atmosphere manages to chill our spines. The plot revolves around a man named Yakov. He gets the responsibility to take care of the dead body of an orthodox Jewish. However, his path gets entangled with an unholy spirit, Mazzik.
Oxygen
One of the best French actresses in recent times, Melanie Laurent, spellbinds us with her outstanding work in this movie. Oxygen turned out as an underdog movie this year. It exceeded the expectations of the viewers. It is much more than a traditional sci-fi thriller. The tense and claustrophobic atmosphere of the movie keeps us on the edge of our seats. It starts with Elizabeth trapped in a cryogenic unit. Her oxygen levels get way too low. She has no recollection of the past events that led to her drastic condition.
The Dig
It looks like Carey Mulligan is on a path to give amazing movies to the viewers these days. There is no denying that the audience is watching her best version on the screen. The Dig provides one of her finest performances ever. Inspired by the novel of the same name, it is set during the excavations of Sutton Hoo. She shares the screen alongside Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, and others. It also received five BAFTA nominations this year.
Shiva Baby
Shiva Baby is undoubtedly one of the best comedy movies of 2021. It got dispatched last year in Canada. But it was released nearly a month ago on a worldwide scale. It was especially praised for its humour and performances. It focuses on a young bisexual Jewish girl named Danielle. She joins the traditional shiva period with her family. Things get way too complicated when her ex-lover, Maya, and her sugar daddy, Max, accompany her in that period.
The White Tiger
The White Tiger largely stands on the stellar performances of the cast and an elegant storyline. Along with the Bollywood veterans like Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Rajkummar Rao, the debutant Adarsh Gourav performed exceptionally well. He even received a BAFTA nomination for his beautiful work in the movie. It displays the interesting journey of Balram (Gourav). He belongs to a poor village background. But he utilizes his smartness and cunning nature to get rid of poverty.
Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry
Whenever we talk about Billie Eilish, we always get a mixed reaction from the song lovers. Some love her, some hate her, and the remaining ones are still not sure about her. Her unorthodox approach to the songs often meets a mixed critical reception. But there is no doubt in admitting that she is one of the most prominent singers in the world right now. This documentary of hers shows the journey of her success combined with her internal struggles. It flawlessly highlights several important moments of her career.
Raya and the Last Dragon
Raya and the Last Dragon is another delightful and gorgeous production of Disney. Under the directional duo of Don Hall and Carlos Lopez Estrada, it excels at bestowing top-notch visuals and outstanding voice performances from the cast. Unfortunately, it witnessed a simultaneous release in the theatres and the Disney+ platform due to the ongoing pandemic. It showcases the adventures of Raya and her dragon friend Sisu. Both of them help the people of Kumandra to remove the evil spirits called Druun.
Judas and the Black Messiah
This movie is easily one of the greatest biographical dramas that have emerged in the last few years. It consists of the career-best performances of the leading duo, Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield. Thanks to the deft direction of Shaka King, it rises as an emotional and energetic rollercoaster ride. It portrays the events that led to the assassination of the former chairman of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton (Kaluuya). It also mentioned how William O’Neal (Stanfield), a former FBI informant, played a crucial role in his termination.
Minari
Minari offers a poignant portrayal of a Korean family who tries to settle in the rural regions of America in the 1980s. It garnered widespread acclaim for its performances, screenplay, musical score, and direction. The leading man, Steven Yeun, delivered a career-defining performance in the movie. It was nominated for six Oscars this year. One of the legendary Korean actresses, Youn Yuh-jung, created history by becoming the first-ever Korean performer to bag an Academy Award (Best Supporting Actress) for her performance.
Nomadland
Nomadland beautifully exhibits a devastating and realistic portrayal of the consequences of the Great Recession in the global economy. Millions of people lost their jobs and faced severe financial difficulties during that period. Frances McDormand plays the character of a recession affected woman named Fern. She loses her job at the US Gypsum plant. She also deals with the recent loss of her husband. The lack of money forces her to spend her valuable belongings. Later, she buys a van and travels across America as a nomad. This movie aided McDormand in winning two Oscars (Best Actress/Best Movie) this year. Her partner in crime, director Chloe Zhao also bagged an Oscar for Best Director.
