Over the last year, travelers have spent less time in the air, but their enthusiasm for flying — which begins with a world-class on-the-ground experience — hasn’t dimmed.

When international visitors return to their beloved airports, they’ll find a nice surprise: many major hubs took advantage of the pandemic’s idleness to freshen up their facilities, refurbishing lounges and extending common areas to provide more social amenities.

Some have previously undergone substantial changes as starchitects worked their magic, transforming them into bright and spacious airports with amenities ranging from spas and yoga rooms to beautiful outdoor gardens and swimming pools.

Here are the top 10 best airports in the world.

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)

Singapore Changi Airport, sometimes known as Changi, is a major civilian international airport serving Singapore and one of Asia’s busiest transit hubs.

It is now named the World’s Best Airport by Skytrax, the only airport in the world to do so for eight consecutive years. It is one of the world’s busiest airports by international passenger and cargo traffic.

It’s also been named one of the cleanest airports in the world, as well as a top international transit hub. More than 100 airlines fly nonstop or direct from the airport to destinations across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

Tokyo International Airport

Haneda Airport, also known as Tokyo Haneda Airport and Haneda International Airport, is one of two international airports serving the Greater Tokyo Area. The other is Narita International Airport (NRT).

The airport is Tokyo’s second busiest and handles the majority of domestic travel, while it is expanding to handle more foreign traffic. Haneda is Japan Airlines’ and All Nippon Airlines’ primary domestic hub, but it also serves as a hub for regional airlines Air Do and Solaseed Air, as well as low-cost carrier Skymark Airlines.

In 2020, Haneda has recognized the Best Airport: 70+ Million Passengers, Cleanest Airport, Best Domestic Airport, and the Best PRM/Accessible Facilities in the World. Haneda was named the World’s Cleanest and Best Domestic Airport by Skytrax as of 2021, after Qatar’s Hamad International Airport, and is the World’s Cleanest and Best Domestic Airport, a designation it has held since 2020.

Doha’s Hammad International Airport

Hamad International Airport is Qatar’s only international airport and the home of Qatar Airways, the country’s flag carrier airline. It succeeded the nearby Doha International Airport as Qatar’s primary airport and is located south of the country’s capital, Doha.

Hamad International Airport, formerly known as New Doha International Airport (NDIA), was supposed to open in 2008, but due to a series of costly delays, it ultimately opened on April 30, 2014, with a ceremonial Qatar Airways flight landing from adjacent Doha International.

On May 27, 2014, Qatar Airways and all other airlines moved to the new airport. The airport is named after Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar’s previous Emir.

Seoul’s Incheon International Airport

Skytrax has ranked the airport as the fourth finest airport in the world as of 2021. The airport was also named the world’s greatest international transit airport and one of the cleanest airports by Skytrax. The airport is a 5-star Skytrax airport, and it was also named the best airport security in 2021.

A golf course, spa, private sleeping rooms, ice skating rink, casino, indoor gardens, video game center, and Museum of Korean Culture are all available at the airport.

The airport’s average departure and arrival times are 19 and 12 minutes, respectively, compared to a global average of 60 and 45 minutes, making it one of the world’s fastest customs processing airports.

Tokyo’s Narita International Airport

In terms of international passenger and cargo traffic, Narita is Japan’s busiest airport. In 2018, 33.4 million international passengers and 2.2 million tonnes of foreign goods passed through Narita.

In 2018, Narita was Japan’s second-busiest airport in terms of aircraft movements (behind Tokyo’s Haneda Airport) and the world’s tenth-busiest air freight hub. Its 4,000-meter (13,123-foot) main runway is tied for the longest runway in Japan with Kansai International Airport in Osaka’s second runway.

Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Nippon Cargo Airlines all have international hubs at Narita, as well as low-cost airlines Jetstar Japan and Peach.

The airport, which is located on the city’s west side, is London’s principal international gateway and has continuously been one of Europe’s busiest airports year after year.

Heathrow serves over 180 airports in 90 countries, allowing passengers to travel to almost every part of the globe. British Airways is based there, and airlines like Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, and Singapore Airlines use it as a hub.

Kansai International Airport

The airport, which is built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, is the principal gateway to Japan’s Greater Osaka Region and the nearest international airport to Kyoto and Kobe.

All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Nippon Cargo Airlines, and low-cost carrier Peach all have hubs at Kansai, which has the world’s longest terminal. Kansai was named Best Airport Staff in Asia, World’s Best Airport Staff, and World’s Best Airport for Baggage Delivery by Skytrax in 2020. The airport handled 25.2 million passengers in 2016, making it Asia’s 30th busiest and Japan’s third busiest.

Hong Kong International Airport

With about 65,000 employees, HKIA is a significant contribution to Hong Kong’s economy. More than 100 airlines fly from the airport to more than 180 destinations across the world.

HKIA handled 68.5 million passengers in 2015, making it the world’s eighth busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic and the fourth busiest in terms of international passenger traffic.  It has also eclipsed Memphis International Airport as the world’s busiest airport in terms of cargo volume since 2010.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), which was founded on December 1, 1995, manages and operates the airport.

Terminal 2 has been undergoing redevelopment from 2019 to accommodate additional traffic owing to the third runway, and will not reopen until at least 2024.
